Troop 33 "Cache to Eagle" Geocaching Game
Welcome! This fun Geocaching course was created by Dylan Desrosiers of Troop 33, North Attleboro, MA for his Geocaching Merit Badge during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic. It's designed so you can practice social distancing and you won't have to touch anything. Grab a smartphone and a parent to drive you between the five different waypoints in our town. Or you can get in some physical fitness by walking or cycling. All you have to do is find and scan the QR code at each waypoint to learn more about the Troop 33 Eagle Project it's located at.
This is a 5.0 mile course from start to end. Estimated 2hrs walking, 45mins cycling, or 30mins driving.
Disclaimer: it's recommended that you drive, as if you choose to walk or cycle, you'll be on Kelley Blvd. at one point, which is a busy road.
Instructions:
Download the Gaia GPS app (free) on your smartphone if you don't have a handheld GPS. The normal GPS app on your phone, like Google Maps, Apple Maps, or Waze, will not work for this.
Download a QR code scanner app if your phone's camera does not have that feature built-in. You can find this on the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
Remember to set the coordinate system in the app to Degrees, Minutes, Seconds (DMS). This is covered in the video.
Type in the coordinates at the bottom of this page, and start navigating (walking, cycling, or driving) to the first location.
When you get to a waypoint, search around for the QR code. The supplied coordinates will get you to the general area of the hidden QR code. You're looking for a bright pink piece of paper with a QR code on it. You may have to do some searching around. One rule of Geocaching is that Geocaches cannot be buried, covered, or hidden under anything. You should not have to dismantle anything to find the QR code. Remember, this is a no-touch activity to avoid spreading germs.
When you find it, scan the QR code, read about the Eagle Project you're standing at, and take a picture of yourself at each waypoint. Hang on to those photos for the last waypoint where you'll need to submit them on an online form to prove you actually completed the course!
There are a total of five waypoints. Navigate to each one, scan the code, and input the next set of coordinates into your GPS. The coordinates for the next waypoint appear at the bottom of each page.
Have fun!
The first four (4) Scouts to complete the course will get to throw a pie at the Scoutmaster or Assistant Scoutmaster of their choice, whenever our next meeting is!
3 out of 4 pies have been claimed!
Starting Coordinates:
41°58'26.2"N
71°18'56.5"W
Note: this first waypoint is within a North Attleboro Parks & Recreation property. If you're driving, park in the school parking lot nearby and walk over if the entrance road is blocked off, which it currently is until May 4th, 2020. All town parks are still open for walking and running on trails only, according to the town's website. Read more by clicking here. This waypoint is not located near any playground equipment, which the town says no one should use since the coronavirus can last for up to nine days on stainless and plastic playground equipment.
